She made the remarks on Sunday during the closing of a two day girls’ leadership training which was held at Girls Empowerment Network (GENET) offices in Area 3, Lilongwe.

Banda said that her organization decided to conduct the training in order to equip the girls with leadership skills.

“As an organization, our main task is to empower girls with leadership skills. For this reason, we thought it wise to conduct the leadership training as one way of equipping the girls with leadership techniques such as advocacy skills,” Banda said.

F4GL is implementing a project dubbed ‘Empower Her: The Power to Lead’ with support from Freedom Fund.

She said that their drive is to build capacity among girls in order for them to be responsible in their society.

“Our mission is to give a voice to the girls by empowering them with different skills so that they should be active in their community.

“We believe that every girl has potential to make a difference in life, therefore we give space and platform for girls to explore their potential and abilities of being leaders,” she said.

According to Banda, empowering girls and young women with leadership skills enables them to be independent in decision making and problem solving and it also gives them power to focus on their vision and fight challenges such as child marriage.

The recent leadership training was patronized by 10 girls from different academic institutions including; Mkwichi Secondary School, Chancellor College and Polytechnic.

A Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute student who attended the training, Annie Swalley commended F4GL for organizing the leadership training saying that the skills which she has obtained will help her to defend girls’ rights by speaking on the issues affecting them.

One of the youth activists in the country who is also the founder of Lilongwe based youth organization dubbed Titha Youth Movement, Damson Ntokoma applauded F4GL for supporting girls in the country saying that their support would help create conducive environment for girls in the county.

Apart from providing leadership trainings, F4GL provides academic support such as bursaries and long lasting mentorship sessions among the girls in an effort for them to realize their potential.
