Man commits suicide in presence of 3-year-old son after advice to quit  beer

A 26 year old man in Chikwawa has committed suicide by hanging in protest of his wife’s advice for him to quit beer drinking.

Chikwawa Police Station spokesperson, Constable Foster Benjamin said the deceased , Symon Nyaude, is believed to have hanged himself between the night of November 17 and 18, 2018 at Sekeni Village in Paramount Chief Lundu in the district.

“The deceased, who was a bicycle taxi-man, used to pick quarrels with his wife over his drinking habits and on 16 November, the wife set out for her home village owing to her hubby’s unchanging drinking habits,” said Benjamin.

He added that the wife to the deceased left behind a three year old child, and upon hearing the news of the departure of his wife, the deceased used his belt to hang himself to the roof.

“On Sunday at about 11 o’clock am, neighbours were surprised to hear a loud cry from the deceased house. They found the three year old child crying beside a lifeless father who was hanging from the roof,” said Benjamin.

Police and medical personnel found Nyaude had died of suffocation secondary to strangulation.

Meanwhile, the law enforcers have strongly urged those in stressful situations not to contemplate killing themselves but rather seek guidance and counseling or report to appropriate authorities for advice.
