24 models, 9 designers register for Malawi Fashion Week
At least 24 models and 9 designers, both local and international, have so far expressed their interest to participate in the forthcoming Malawi Fashion Week (MFW) 2013.
This has been disclosed by MFW organizers, Elegant Resources by ArianaLouise and African Dzuwa.
Registration for the fashion week started two weeks ago as the Malawi fashion industry prepares for the event, slated to take place in Lilongwe this coming winter.
MFW, the first of its kind in the country, will be held from May 30 to June 3 at Umodzi Park located at the Presidents Hotel Arena in the capital city and is open to Malawian and foreign participants.
“The response has been exciting and a lot of people are still registering,” said MFW CEO Dawa Loga-Lemberger.
According to Loga-Lemberger, other countries that have confirmed participation are Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and the United Kingdom.
“Out of the twenty-four models seventeen are local while two of the nine designers, one is from UK and one from South Africa,” she disclosed further.
She added: “We are encouraging people to registering now because once registration is closed, they will lose the opportunity to be part of this historic event.”
Elegant Resources and African Dzuwa have since indicated that auditions to select local models that will rock the runway during the four-day event will be conducted next weekend at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.
According to the MFW organizers, the event has so far reached 55,000 people within the past week through their Facebook Page, with close to 8,000 followers.
“We definitely will have over 20,000 followers by May [and] the page shows that Malawians and Africans as a whole are engaged in the idea [of Malawi Fashion Week.”
Among the designers that are expected to take part in MFW are Lilly Alfonso and Rose Kaleke.
