Poly champions of inter university debate: ‘Can Malawi do without aid’

Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, became the inaugural winners of the Inter Varsity Debate organized by Centre for Free Market Enterprise (CFME) on Saturday 27 February 2016.

Poly saw off Blantyre International University in the final at Chancellor College-Little Theatre in Zomba, in a very hotly contested finale.

The debate question was “Can Malawi do without Aid” and the winners factually argued on the opposition that Malawi can’t do without Aid.

Speaking after the final CFME Executive Director Peter Yakobe described the debates as a huge success, considering it was a first of its kind.

He was grateful with the cooperation of the four participating universities, and said they were already receiving calls from other universities to be considered in the next debate contest.

Yakobe said the debates provided students the chance to come up with solutions to the economical problems the country is currently facing and personal problems like high unemployment rate.

“We have a tendency whereby we blame others for our personal failures and we wanted to make it clear that we must take responsibility on whatever challenge has come instead of waiting for someone to make life better for us,” said Yakobe.

He added: “ From these debates, the university students have come to conclude that the public sector plays a very huge role in an economy and therefore they have to be supported through a conducive environment for trade so that they can thrive.

“And the students also said that the young people have a very big role to play in the economic development of the country, they just have to stand up and take their respective roles and bring the change they want to see.”

Evance Banda, voted the best debater from Poly,  thanked CFME for organizing the debate saying as university students they have learnt a lot through the run of the competition.

He therefore called for his fellow young people and Malawian at large to start doing something about developing country and not only wait for the government.

As champions Poly walked away with K150,000 in cash while BIU got K100,000.

In the third and fourth place play off Chancellor College defeated Catholic University, Chanco received K50,000 and CU were consoled with K20,000.

Center for Free Market Enterprise is non-governmental organization that is involved in training young people in the country in entrepreneurship, with their target being university students, young people in rural areas and young people in prisons especially those remaining with less than 6 months
