University of Malawi student leaders meet over #feesmustfall action
University of Malawi student leadership meets this Thursday for a final decision on whether to stop protests or not following the reduction of the college fees by K50 000.
University of Malawi (Umsu) vice president Godfrey Pumbwa said the student leaders met on Saturday in Mangochi to discuss President Peter Mutharika’s directive a few weeks ago to reduce the fees.
“We agreed that each student should participate in the decision making on whether we should allow the K50 000 fees drop or we should go ahead with other means to force the government reduce the fees further.
“ We have asked the students to make their contributions through email so on Thursday we will meet and see what the students. We don’t want to make decisions for the students,” said Pumbwa.
State House press officer Mgeme Kalilani says the government will be subsdizing K1 billion a year after the K50000 fees slash.
Some students, including Chancellor College students union president Ayuba James said the fees reduction was too little.
