Court rules sex ritualist Aniva has case to answer : Malawi ‘hyena man’
Nsanje ‘hyena’ Eric Aniva, the man who confessed to defiling young girls and sleeping with widows in a sexual cleansing ritual when he was HIV positive has a case to answer on charges of harmful cultural practices and an attempt to commit the same offence contrary to Section 5 sub-sections 1 and 2 of the Gender Equality Act of 2013, the Nsanje Magistrates’ Court has ruled.
Aniva, 45, who has to defend himself from the case, opted to remain silent on the court’s determination.
Principal resident magistrate Innocent Nebi has since set November 18 at 2pm for judgement.
Aniva’s story became popular following an interview he granted the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on July 21, in which he confessed being hired to sleep with girls and widows in a sexual cleansing ritual. The revelations prompted President Peter Mutharika to order his arrest.
He said so far he had slept with over 100 widows and young girls in the sexual ritual cleansing exercises, an outdated cultural practice in Nsanje.
His second wife Fanny Eric said the man stopped the practice way before he married her four years ago.
Aniva hails from Tosina Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mbenje in Nsanje.
