Central Eastern African Railways probes cause of derailed train
The Central Eastern African Railways (CEAR) Limited says investigations are underway to establish the root cause of the accident involving its train that derailed at Makata industrial site in Blantyre on Monday.
It is believed that the accident occurred after a locomotive was disconnected forcing wagons to start moving backwards and eventually overturn.
According to CEAR, about 240,000 liters of diesel belonging to Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) was lost during the accident.
In an interview CEAR Communications and Corporate Image Manager Chisomo Mwamadi said the extent of damage is huge as one locomotive, six wagons and railway line were damaged.
“Until now, the cause of the accident is not known and we are hoping to establish the possible cause of the accident after the investigations are over,” said Mwamadi.
According to Mwamadi, the company has currently initiated maintenance works to rehabilitate the damaged railway line.
“We believe soon after the exercise, the railway line will resume its operation,” he said.
He further said the company is working on different measures to prevent a recurrence of a similar accident.
