Flags fly at half-staff for Malawi ‘soldiers’: Mutharika offers support to bereaved families and injured officers
Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has lowered flags to half-staff in honor of soldiers who died in a fatal road accident in the northern district of Mzimba as President Peter Mutharika says his government will support bereaved families those officers who are injured.
18 soldiers were confirmed dead by Thursday evening.
The soldiers had just completed their military training in the region and were driving back to a base, the Malawi Armed Forces College (Mafco) in Salima, a central region district some 98.2 kilometers (around 60 miles) from the capital, Lilongwe.
“The vehicle was carrying 35 officers including military instructors,” Malawi Defence Force (MDF) spokesman Maj. Paul Chiphwanya said.
Chiphwanya said the cause of the accident was not yet known but initial reports indicate that the military vehicle plunged into South Rukuru River.
Mutharika, in a statement signed by Chief Secretary to government, Lloyd Muhura extends his condolences.
The statement says the President who is also Commander-In-Chief of MDF and the First Lady Getrude Mutharika are “deeply saddened”.
“The president is assuring the bereaved and affected families that Government will do everything within its means, to support them during this difficult time,” reads part of the statement.
There was panic among relatives of officers across the country to find out the status quo of their loved ones when the news broke.
The relatives had to phone in to the the Defense Force to confirm.
One family which opted for anynomity, we’re relieved when they were told by Defence Force officials that their brother was not in the company that was involved in the accident in the presence of our reporter.
Meanwhile, Mutharika wishes those injured a speedy recovery.

Its high time Government vehicles i.e. including Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police et all go for Certificate of Fitness. I have come across some Vehicles that are not roadworthy but since they consider themselves Government the vehicles are left to roam the roads of Malawi.
I am not saying its cause of this accident but unroadworth vehicles should not be on the roads of Malawi whether Government owned or not.
When in other countries they establish credible investigation into ngozi like iyi it’s not just getting through trivial routines. It’s to know what to change! How many army vehicles especially trucks are roadworthy? I first hand encountered an army truck on the ZA-road literally without rear lights. In front no single light and a passenger held a literal torch kumamuwunikila driver chonsecho anyamula anthu. Malawi you mean 18 lives, 18 households face such tragedy and you end kuti basi ndithu ngozi pepani akubanja takhudzika? Baaasi? From my many encounters with army vehicles on the road I feel sad. Why hitting one of them at a drinking joint? Why? That is an act of provocation. They are from the same community and they defend one another. In Nigeria, a policemen manning a road block hit a senior officer servicing in the Nigerian Navy after a protracted disagreement on an issue regarding vehicle search procedures. A team of Navy soldiers descended on the police road block destroying a building used as office and police cell. It was a mini war along the road. Your “tikamumenya ku mowa ” is a discussion for another day. Most of us including our Commander… Read more »
