Burundian senteced 6 years to Malawi prison for sexual assaults and impregnating 14 year-old girl

The Nkukula Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has convicted and sentenced a 21 year old Burundian man Leonard Juma to six years Imprisonment with Hard Labour for defiling and impregnating a 14 year old girl.

Juma who was operating a business at Dubai in Area 49 in Lilongwe and committed the offence in April this year.

State Prosecutor Sergeant Esnart Phiri paraded four witnesses who testified again Juma who pleaded guilty to the charge.

In mitigation , he pleaded for leniency since he was a first offender and also to take full responsibility of the pregnancy though he is already married.

While passing judgement, Magistrate Cecilia Onsewa bemoaned highprevalence of cases of sexual assault on young girls.

He said such acts not only traumatise the victims during the commission of the offences but also their respective entire life.

Meanwhile, Kanengo Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Laban Makalani has warned men against sleeping with girls under the age of 18 saying ‘this is against the constitutional law’.
