General Alliance donates K4m to Zomba Central Hospital for Eye Department

Zomba Central Hospital has received a donation amounting to K4 million courtesy of General Alliance Insurance Limited.

Directed to the Eye Department the donation is meant to fight against avoidable blindness.

Speaking during the cheque presentation at the hospital on Wednesday, General Alliance Limited Business Development Manager Mphatso Kanzingeni Zulu said the company recognises the need to help in ensuring that blindness cases are reduced and that the donation is part of their corporate social responsibility.

‘For Zomba Central Hospital to give the best treatment to patients with eye related diseases, they need support hence we stepped in to contribute to the well-being of people we serve by donating this money”, he said

In his remarks, cataract surgeon at the hospital Dr Frank Mwale hailed General Alliance Insurance Limited for the timely financial support saying the donation was going to impact the services at the hospital.

He said the facility has been facing challenges like worn out of medical equipment and that the money will go towards acquiring of new equipment and medication.

“Almost 1% of the population in  Malawi are blind and the trend would have been reduced if companies and non-governmental organisations put in more support to fight eye problem related diseases,”he said.

According to Mbewe, the facility which is a main referral hospital in south east health zone, conducts 500 eye surgeries a month.
