Minister visits Mangochi boy scalded for ‘misusing’ K100, shocked

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha says she is shocked with the conduct of a Mangochi woman who scalded her five year-old son for allegedly misusing K100.

Navicha being briefed by health workers on the boy’s condition

Zeliya Kasiya allegedly scalded both hands of Dalitso Banda on July 19 2019 after the minor ‘misused’ the money at the market where he was sent to buy items.

When some community members noticed the boy’s critical condition, they alerted police who rushed to the scene and issues a report to enable him to receive medical attention.

However, speaking in an interview on Thursday when he visited the victim at Mangochi District Hospital, Navicha said she was shocked by Kasiya’s ill –treatment of the child.

“This is an innocent child who did not deserve this punishment. This is violence of the highest order against children.

“I will ensure that such parents face the law. Such women will be prosecuted to protect children and to end such violence,” said the minister.

Navicha asked the district’s social welfare officers to ensure that the woman faces trial and that the other children in the family are well taken care.

Meanwhile, Mangochi police station spokesperson Rhodrick Maida said the mother was arrested, but was given bail t take care of the child before her case is taken to court.

Zenasi John Banda, the boy’s father, thanked the minister for paying them a visit.

Why punish parents ,there is no cash in village, yet two wives of presidents spend over K50,000,000 in just one week.

In as much as I do not condone such treatment to children we also need to know poverty levels in Malawi has reached extreme situation. Probably this was the last kobo and the women was even afraid of the wrath of the husband upon returning from his errands. Sad moment for our country and what to do about it when the governments has wrong priorities. 30 million kwacha spent ku graduation

The Apostle, to add to your view points, the scalded child needs care from her mother and who will look after him when you keep the mother behind the bars. Navicha should understand why the woman acted in that manner – she could have been helpless if that was the only money she had. The description that it was violation of the highest order is completely misplaced. Do not say that to score a political mileage. Deal with the problem, which is poverty.

The problem is that u always talk about Nkhaza azibambo kwa azimayi but you always forget that the most culprit of abuse are women to Children bcoz most of time men are out searching for basic needs but women almost 80% are idle or house wife spending more time with these kids and abusing them.

Bring specific law to protect these kids against this kind of abuse Wether committed by biological parents or not but punishment should be the same.

This is a sad story indeed, as much as we condemn the cruelty against young boy BUT at the same time we must as well see the underlying problem here. This speaks a volume about the levels of poverty in our country. When we say that the country is going in the wrong direction these are the signs.
