Mutharika appoints new parastatal boards: Jumbe, Apostle Mbewe, Sendera Sisters vocalist get posts

President Peter Mutharika has  appointed new board of directors for  some statutory corporations following the expiry of terms of office for previous holders  and  rewarded party members and those who tow this government line including faith leaders, chiefs and some for civil society.

Jumbe:  Appointed chair of Admarc board

Mutharika has appointed former legislator Felix Jumbe to chair the troubled Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc). Other board members at Admarc include Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) youth leader Dumisani Lindani and media practitioner Tusekele Mwanyongo a former press officer for former president Joyce Banda.

According to a statement released last evening by Chief Secretary to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Lloyd Muhara, the appointments, which are with immediate effect, have included individuals of diverse backgrounds such as members of legal fraternity, academia, business, civil society, politicians, clergy and traditional leaders.

Mutharika has also maintained some board chairpersons such as James Naphambo at Blantyre Water Board (BWB).

Religious leaders among them Apostle Madalitso Mbewe  of Calvary Fanily Church and Bishop Charles Tsukuluza who recently formed Interfaith Forum for Peace and Justice and Dialogue, a grouping disowned by other prominent church leaders have also been given top positions.

Apostle Mbewe has been retained as board chairperson of  Central Region Water Board (CRWB) with Tsukuluza heading Lilongwe Water Board (LWB),.

Leaders of some NGOs whom some Human Rights Defenders have dubbed GoNGOs (Government Owned NGOs) among them Undule Mwakasungula-(Smedi board), Fryson Chodzi (Nocma board), have also been appointed.

However, Mutharika has once again included in some parastatal organisations with traditional leaders who include Chief Lukwa,  Chief Khongoni, Chief Kaomba despite political commentators questioning the moral of their massive inclusion in previous appointments.

Chancellor College political scientist Boniface Dulaniis on record to have observed there was little traditional leaders bring to the boards as they do not have the expertise.

Others appointed include  DPP Sendera Sisters vocalist Mirriam Chimbalanga who is in the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) Board.

What strategic points? Board Members?????? At this point in time looking how shakey the ground that he is standing on is. One needs nation building not nepotism & regionalism. People you can try to ignore the truth BUT things on the ground are not as rosy as you wish them to be. Malawi needs a leader who can try to glue it together cos Malawi has cracked badly.

Peter Hitler Mutharika see every person who is not from the Lomwe belt as his enemy. He is solidifying every institution with his Southerners because he doesn’t trust tribes from other regions. Is this what Malawians want? I don’t think so. It will be better if Southern region could peel off From the other two regions and be an independent nation on their ow. It can be a kindom like Swaziland. I guess in this case Peter Hitler Mutharika will be their king. 70% of Malawians have rejected him, but he is still imposing himself on Malawians through violence. He… Read more »

A Malawi now I understand why we fail to understand political issues. You do not appoint people into strategic positions who do not agree with you on issues to do with running of govt institutions. There is an issue of trust here. So there is no way a person can appoint his/her enemy to be his property manager. Ukapeza zinthu zitawonongeka. Even in USA after elections, four thousand people lose their jobs in govt if a different political party from the previous one has been voted into govt. Nothing special here. Koma kuno iyayi bwanji akanasankha wo osati awa, thats… Read more »

The more things change the more they don’t change….. amachita kuuzanatu amvekere muuzeni Bwana akonjeretu ma board members kuti if there is a rerun anthu athu akhale Ali m’malo kale poti zimenezo sizingasithidwenso.. Kodi ma investigative journalists, can someone uncover how money is siphoned out through these boards? How much of the taxpayers money do the board members themselves take home? And how effective are they? However obviously with this selection on political party and tribe lines there is no way they can be effective on helping poor Malawi develop.
