No regime change agenda beyond Ansah issue – HRDC
Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has dismissed the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) claims that they are plotting insurrection, saying the organisation hat which has successfully organised a series of protests in the country since elections in May, .has no political agenda apart from ensuring the resignation of Jane Ansah as the head of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
HRDC vice-chairperson Gift Trapence was reacting to DPP regional governor for the South, Charles Mchacha who claimed HRDC was working with opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM Party to topple the government of President Peter Mutharika.
Mchacha, who is also Deputy Minister of Transport and Public Works, told a news conference in Blantyre on Thursday that the party membership will now have “renewed energy” to protect its governance status and also “rescue Malawi from anarchy.”
But Trapence in quotes reported by the local press said HRDC are only interested to see to it that the electoral body becomes professional in managing elections and not bastardise people’s votes.
“HRDC has no plans for regime change agenda beyond the Jane Ansah issue,” explained Trapence.
He said HRDC is just serving the interest of Malawians and the voiceless “to make sure that democracy works for every Malawian and that there is rule of law.”
Trapence said HRDC as a human rights organisation is apolitical and is not affiliated to any political grouping.
“We are pro-citizens. HRDC will continue protecting all Malawians,” he said.
Trapence said despite the DPP youth cadets campaign of terror to its members who are targeted for petrol bombs, they will remain resolute to fight for a better Malawi.

Actions speak louder than words, and what comes out of these HRDC leaders is NOT believable, to say the least. Perhaps, if these leaders resigned, and new ones came in and were the ones saying this, Malawians would possibly take the words with a grain of salt – still unbelievable. The have simply damaged their brand, together with that of MCP and UTM – perhaps unintended consequences. HDRC’s association with The Opposition (and UTM) is obvious.
