Malawi army soldiers quell riots in Lilongwe as calm returns in Neno
Calm has returned in Lilongwe and Neno this morning after a day of violent protests and riots yesterday.
Malawi Defense Force MDF) soldiers were deployed to restore order in Area 23 in Lilongwe but tension still remains high.
There were running battles between police and residents who are baying for the blood of a woman suspected to have kidnapped and killed a five year old baby for rituals.
On Monday, police had to fire teargas to disperse the angry residents.
Several people have been arrested in connection with the demonstration which has seen a Chipiku Plus shop torched down in the process.
It is reported that the family was told by a certain prophet that their child was being kept in their rich neighbor’s house for money rituals.
This angered community members who ganged up and attacked the suspected woman demanding her to ‘release’ the baby.
Ironically, while the residents claimed the baby’s body was in the suspect’s house, it later transpired that the body was discovered in Area 18.
In Neno, there were chaotic scenes as an angry mob destroyed property belonging to a businessman Yohane George, whom they suspect of being behind a reported murder of one of his workers.
It is alleged that George sent his employee, Sailesi Sadwala, on an errand to Mozambique where he went missing for some days.
Later, police say, the relatives of the missing person started receiving phone calls from another person claiming to be the missing person and needed help.
He was later successfully arrested by police.
But yesterday, as police were taking him to court, the irate locals stopped the police vehicle demanding to ‘deal’ with the suspect on their own.
Following the disagreement, police had to fire teargas to disperse the people.
After this incident, the mob organised itself and headed to George’s house where they destroyed his house and burnt his three vehicles.
Among other things, the locals claim that the arrested conman had connived with the businessman to kill Sadwala.
There is however no evidence that Sadwala is dead until now.
Police are yet to state if they have made arrests or not thus far.

This article could have been written in a less confusing way. Who is editing these articles? I have a feeling this comment will be censored, but y’all guys can do better
Now Chakwera/Chilima &Mtambo they’re all smilling that the seed they sow during demonstrations has now sarted bearing fruits and soon they are going to reap.Kumangopephera kuti makwalala tikukhalamu asakupekere nkhani ungodziwa kuti ukumanana ndi anyamata OSAOPA
Is there any connection with Chakwera and Chilima on this article?I don’t even think you passed your exams. The question is saying WHEN and you answer on HOW.Eish
@Lego I see the connection, Chakwera, Chilima and Mtambo popularized the use of demonstration as the way of showing anger, frustration and un satisfaction. They coined the word OSAOPA to tell the masses that they have every right to demonstrate willy nilly.
So yes the connection is 100% correct its the fruits of those three
Malawi is full of idiots who believe in useless things. Some are spreading news that the Covid-19 vaccine is aimed at wiping out Africans. What the hell is this? We easily get cheated by the so-called prophets. We do not even know the meaning of a prophet.
A nation full of these type of dull and useless citizens can never develop. Our schools, churches, leaders have completely let the nation down.
The fake prophet was supposed to be behind bars by now. I hope he has realised his foolishness. I sympathize with Neno missing man relatives. How can a normal person do that to relatives who are searching for their missing relative? The man in the hands of Police deserves to be behind bars. I know people will say; no that’s a small offence. Yes it may sound like small but look at the consequences. I disagree with those who think that the current trend in people’s volatile behaviour is because a certain politician said; osawopa. This trend started long before… Read more »
Mmmmmh inunso army mupepera nazo kumangoti pang’ono uku mwapita ukumwapita mpaka ku maDemo amene aaaah. Aaa anthu atha nanu mantha kaya. Ndi ntchito ya apolice imeneyo. A siyireni apolice ntchito zao tsopano kabidikireni. Osamangotuluka pali ponse. It’s this chakwera and hos tonse alayansi who taught the Malawian this violent behavior.
This behaviour of violence, property destruction, murder and rioting is now becoming the order of the day. People where told kuti OSAOPA, they were taught that violence is the only language to use to be heard. This nation needs healing, otherwise, violence will become our second nature.
Can’t agree more. Slowly Malawi is becoming just like the Central African Republic (CAR). Dialogue has no place only demos and conflicts and deployment of soldiers. osaopa was very dangerous word to use look now our beloved youths are radicalised and have no regard for authority. Hrdc ideology imeneyo
The country needs healing true but not with this so called Mtambo. Even the Chakwera and the Chilima their dreams of becoming leader has just become the worst nightmare than they have ever thought. Munthu umakolora chomwe wafetsa.
This is no difference to the uselessness i have described above. Every action is blamed on someone else. Instead of calling these fully grown dunderheads out for their pathetic behaviour, you have uselessly blamed Chilima and Chakwera campaign. Each fully grown person who joined the mob is responsible. What they are missing is deeper than last years pathetic political crap.
Arrest the prophet please.
These problems arise from two factors (1) people have no faith in the justice system and thus take the law into their own incapable and bigoted hands (2) people believe things that others tell them with absolutely zero evidence (simply manipulation of stupid unquestioning people).
There is a need to reform the justice system. The justice system we inherited from the British is not suited to the Malawian context. The system is slow to handle issues and as result people have no faith in it and result to taking matters in their own hands. Furthermore when the accused are handed bail and the people see them in the streets, people suspect that corruption has taken place raising further distrust of the justice system
Illiteracy and poverty at play.
Belief with zero evidence= religion
