Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament endorses abolition of death penalty
Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament says it endorses the abolition of the death penalty in Malawi.
The Committee’s Chairperson Peter Dimba said its public inquiry shows that people in the country are in support of the death penalty.
Dimba has specifically told the Ministry of Justice to bring the bill to parliament that will support the abolishment of death penalty.
He said the sentence infringes on human rights and is unconstitutional, among others.
Dimba said committee’s research showed that death penalty does not reduce the crimes that attract such punishment and that no president has ever signed for death warrant.
