Zambian ex-sex worker to reform Malawi hookers
A former Zambian sex worker, Precious Kawinga has partnered with a local theatre company, Solomonic Peacocks Theatre in a project aimed at reforming commercial sex workers in Malawi.
Kawinga, who was one of the contenders in Zambia’s Africa Unite Television, Ready For Marriage reality show forged the partnership with Solomonic Peacock last month and is expected to launch her project in Malawi in September this year.
Solomonic Director Macarthur Matukuta disclosed in an interview the project is similar to the one Kawinga currently is implementing in Zambia.
“The core object of the project is to transform sex workers and mould them into responsible citizens and take them out of prostitution by helping them realizing their life dreams and goals. I don’t think one would dream of becoming sex workers. Most of them are forced into it due to various circumstances that are why we accepted to work with her on this project,” Matukuta said.
He said the pilot phase of the project will target commercial sex workers plying their trade in townships and cities, starting with the commercial city of Blantyre before extending to other areas.
“Kawinga is expected to be in the country by September and as of now we are still working on the modalities of the project as well as searching for partners. We are hoping that at the end of the project we will have managed to help as many sex workers as possible out of the trade and contribute effectively to the fight against HIV and Aids pandemic,” he explained.
According to Matukuta as part of the project Kawinga will be holding pep-talk sessions and series of seminars with targeted sex workers, helping them how to realize their life goals and take leading role in the fight against the deadly pandemic.
Kawinga scoped second position in Ready For Marriage, a reality show that was beamed on Africa Unite Television popularly known as Muvi TV. She has since been on drive seat holding pep-talks and seminars aimed at helping commercial sex workers out of the trade.
In Malawi commercial sex working is illegal despite the fact many young girls are getting into the trade.
If the project is implemented, Solomonic Peacocks will become second theatre institution implementing similar project. Another one is Nanzikambe Arts Theatre organization.
