DPP confusion: Vuwa contradict Chaponda

Parliamentary chief whip of the former governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Symon Vuwa Kaunda has contradicted the party House leader Dr George Chaponda on for querying President Joyce Banda on the appointment of the new Commissioners for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

When he responded to the State of the Nation address in Parliament on behalf of DPP, Chaponda  said President Banda appointed “a highly politicized” Commission including current senior political office  bearers of political parties.

Chaponda said “it is felt that the letter requesting us to provide names was merely window dressing and not done in good faith.”

Vuwa Kaunda: Nothing to complain about Malawi Electoral Commission

But Vuwa Kaunda speaking on Daybreak Malawi programme on Capital FM Radio Friday said President Banda wrote to political parties including DPP to nominate candidates to be considered for appointment as Electoral Commission Commissioners.

He trashed the accusations by Chaponda as misplaced.

“DPP was consulted,” said Vuwa.  “Government consulted the [DPP] and the party wrote back government and nominated Bishop Bernard Malango.”

“Where is the basis for us to complain,” wondered the former ministers.

He stressed that the Electoral Commission was “duly constituted.”

The new commissioners are Nancy Tembo, Reverend Emmanuel Chimkwita Phiri , Gloria Chingota, Stanley Biliati and Elvey Mtafu.

Others are Reverend Allan Chiphiko, Archbishop emeritus Bernard Malango , Reverend Mezuwa Banda , Bertha Simwaka and Wellington Nakanga.

Presidential and Parliamentary Elections are scheduled for May 2014.
