Veep donates bull, TV to Mzuzu Prison
Malawi Vice President Khumbo Kachali has lived to his pledge by presenting a donation of 51 inches Plasma TV, a bull and five bales of sugar to Mzuzu Prison.
But Prison officials said they do not know what to do with the TV saying they have no hall.
“We don’t know how we are going to use that because we have male and female inmates and we cannot mix them,” Mzuzu prison Station Officer Superintendent Jonas Chimoto said.
The donation a fulfilment of the pledge he made last Sunday when the President Mrs. Joyce Banda visited the Prisonn following a complaint that the prison was in a deplorable condition to the extent that the cells have no space for good live.
All the items are valued at MK617, 500.
Apart from that Kachali and Harry Mkandawire have already pledged to build a MK35 million cell block at Mzuzu Prison to ease congestion. The prison has 447 inmates instead of the recommended 200.
Birthday gift
Kachali’s wife Martha made the donation to inmates on Wednesday saying it has been the family’s tradition to donate to the needy on the occasion of her birthday.
She said though belated, they were happy to celebrate the birthday by sharing with the inmates.
“February 28th is a special day in our family and on that day we usually celebrate with people either in hospitals or prisons,” she said in an interview with Nyasa Times later.
Mrs. Kachali then urged inmates to put their trust in God saying the world is waiting for their release so that they help in the development of the country.
“We are all equal in the eyes of God. The fact that we are out there does not mean we righteous. As inmates you are part of us,” she said.
A representative of the inmates Samuel Phiri thanked the Veep for the donation saying as inmates they have been humbled by the Veep’s gesture.
“We are tongue tied and very thankful indeed,” said Phiri.
