Mzimba by-elections race begins

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has started registering voters in the Mzimba Central and South by-elections set for October this year .

The voter registration process, which has started Monday is expected to close up next month with official aspirant MPs campaign starting up on September 6.

MEC spokesperson, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said in a media statement that a collection of nomination forms for aspiring MPs started on August 1st and will close up on August 31st.

“Right now it’s not known how many are contesting but we are expecting to have the number after we receive the nomination forms. The official campaign is expected to end on October 7, 48 hours before the elections,” Mwafulirwa said.

He said the electoral body would put up strong measures to ensure that only eligible voters register in the voters roll.

“The  Malawi Electoral Commission is requesting all employers,  business  owners, estate owners to allow their employees to participate in this important  exercise. The MEC is also appealing to political parties, Faith-Based Leaders, Civil Society Organizations and Traditional Leaders to encourage their subjects  to go and verify their names in the voters’ register during this period,” a statement sai.

The MEC is also appealing to all school heads and parents to encourage eligible  children and students who have attained or will have attained the age of 18 on  the polling day, to go and register.
