Miss Malawi accused of ‘shoulder tackle’ at world beauty contest
Malawi’s representative at the Miss World pageant Susan Mtegha has grabbed the headlines for a “shoulder tackle” against New Zealand contestant.
International media outlets were awash with the story that organisers of Miss World New Zealand will formally complain to the competition’s international body after Collette Kelly Lochore, a New Zealand contestant was pushed by Miss Malawi as they stood on stage.
The video of the’pegeant push’ circulated on YouTube where Miss Malawi is caught on camera jostling with Miss New Zealand on stage.
Some commenting on the video posted on YouTube said the Malawian beauty queen only wanted to “ to get camera attention.”
While another wrote: “This was the most interesting thing to happen in that pageant it was so boring and the winner was just awful.”
Director of Miss World NZ, Desmond Foulger, has however said he would complain this week.
“What actually happened was that Collette was on her correct spot on stage, but Miss Malawi didn’t realise that. Instead of asking her to move over, she just shoved her, elbowed her, and everybody in the audience was aghast,” he said according to New Zealand Herald.
He also pointed out that Miss Malawi “was bad-mannered.”
“It was a very rude and very unprofessional thing to do,” he protested.
Mtegha – a fashion designer and dancer -only managed to appear in the Top 20 list of the dancing competition in the pageant which Miss China, Yu Wenxia, was crowned the winner.
Miss Malawi organiser Vitu Kamanga has conceded the world pageant exposed lack of preparations and insufficient support for the Malawian contestant.
He however did not give an immediate comment on the pushing incident.
Mtegha arrives in Malawi through Chileka Airport in Blantyre on Tuesday.
