Chasowa tribute at Poly: Students in emotional memorial
There was a poignant tribute to murdered fourth-year Malawi Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa at the University of Malawi’s constituent college, Poly in Blantyre on Monday evening.
Chasowa was found dead on September 24 2011. He is believed to have been killed by former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) assailants.
A commission of inquiry appointed to investigate circumstances surrounding his death is yet to come up with its findings.
Flowers, candles and cards were placed at the place where Chasowa was found dead in a pool of blood.
Speaking at the memorial event, the Polytechnic Students Union (PSU) general secretary Gerald Kanyama said Chasowa “will never be forgotten” and that his legacy as an activist will live on.
“Chasowa was a brave man who stood for justice and he shall be remembered for a long time to come,” said Kanyama.
Tymon Musiwa Banda an electrical engineering fifth year class representative in his tribute for Chasowa said he was inspired by him.
“Even though we were in different classes, I will never forget him. He was a good friend and like a brother. His death shocked everybody,” said Musiwa Banda.
On an emotional evening, students demanded “justice” and to know “the truth” on the matter.
Currently, two suspects – Geoffrey Bottoman, 28, and Peter Petros Tembo, 30, -are remanded at Chichiri prison in connection with the killing which is said to have involved senior DPP officials and some police officers.
The two suspects were nabbed by police on July 17 on allegations that they took part in the murder of Chasowa.
Chasowa’s killing tainted late Bingu wa Mutharika led administration’s human rights record and President Joyce Banda soon after taking over, following death of her predecessor, promised Malawians that deciphering the Chasowa murder puzzle is one of her personal priorities.
