DPP gurus Mutharika, Gondwe attack PP govt: ‘It has no direction’
Former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has charged that he People’s Party government has no direction with regards to guiding Malawi to economic prosperity.
DPP acting president professor Peter Mutharika and vice president Dr Goodall Gondwe said in the final campaign meetings for the two Mzimba by-elections that most of the decisions that Joyce Banda government has made since ascending to power in April after the death of Bingu wa Mutharika, have exposed their inability to manage national affairs properly.
Mutharika called on people of Mzimba to vote for DPP candidates, saying “economy is in the ruins and there is insecurity.”
He said the PP officials “were busy enriching themselves” instead of managing the affairs of the country, asking people of Mzimba to elect people who would work for them not for their stomachs.
Mutharika also took cognizance of the people of Northern Region saying they not only play leading role politically but were also active players in the country’s economy.
He said most of them were engaged in various Professions such as Teaching, Nursing, Agriculture and economics in most parts of the country.
Gondwe, former finance minister, said DPP campaigned in the by-elections centred on real issues instead of engaging provocative politics.
“DPP will always talk issues that affect people and how we can best address them and not personal glorification [by PP leaders],” he said.
Northen region governor Christopher Mzomera Ngwira accused PP of engaging in “dirty campaigns” in order to win votes from the electorates, saying it was immoral and a violation of the electoral code of conduct to demand voter registration numbers.
Ngwira said his team had been doing rounds in the two constituencies and ointed out that indications were that they would grab the two seats or at least win Mzimba central seat.
“We are on the winning path,” Ngwira said.
