Jumbe says sorry to UDF ‘but time to move on’

Former United Democratic Front (UDF) interim president, Friday Jumbe, on Tuesday apologized to all members of UDF, its leadership and the entire family of the former president Dr Bakili Muluzi, for the mistake he made during his working in the party.

Jumbe, who is now the leaders of the newly formed Labour Party, made the remarks when he officially announced his departure from the party and formation of the new party at Superior Hotel in Blantyre.

He said there might be some situations where people may differ in principles and ideologies and that should not be taken as a cause of enemity.

“Let me also openly say that in a grouping there might be some misunderstandings, that is human, therefore time has come to forgive and forget,” he said.

Jumbe: Launches Labour Party

“If I, Friday Jumbe, did anything harm to members of UDF, its leadership, Dr Bakili Muluzi and his entire family, I say sorry and ask God to forgive me. On the other hand, if they also did anything wrong to me, God forgive them,” he said.

Jumbe however was quick to clarify that his remarks have been made to show that he does not have personal grudges with anybody in UDF.

“I am simply extending my conditional apology to them that if I have wronged them, I apologize so too if they have done anything ill to me they should also say sorry, I am just trying to show that am going with a good spirit. I don’t have any personal grudges with anybody in UDF,” he said.

Among the notable faces during the announcement are Ziliro Chibambo, Joseph Kubwalo and Nicholas Kachingwe  including sympathizers.

Analysts says Jumbe’s Labour Party may end up being a “stillbirth”.

University of Malawi’s Chancellor College political scientist Joseph Chunga observed that the country does not need new political parties.

“A party has to be relevant, and not just being formed out of frustration and desperation because they have been outplayed by another camp,”Chunga  is quoted by published reports.
