Chief Kyungu to undergo ‘traditional’ orientation
Clement Nsangalufu Mwakasungula, whom elders in Karonga called ‘Vakambara’ recently anointed as the new Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga will Monday start a 12 traditional orientation prior to his official endorsement by government on October 29.
Sources told Nyasa Times that Mwakasungula will be “quarantined” during this period and no one will have access to him except the elders.
“You know being a chief in Africa is not simple job. So during this period he is going to be drilled on how to protect himself, his people and also be given other paraphernalia that goes with the job,” said a source, who is close to the Kyungu Royal family.
He replaces the 23rd Kyungu — born Lucky Maloloma Mwanyongo — who died on July 22.
Born on 12th September, 1944 at Kasoba AB Mwakasungula village, the new Paramount Chief hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia and a Master of Arts degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from Monash University, Victoria, Australia.
He has worked for Mfanyakazi newspaper in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania as a Sub Editor, The Chronicle newspaper in Bulawayo Zimbabwe as Senior Chief Sub Editor.
At Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) Radio One in Harare, he was a Broadcaster/News Editor and at Radio Australia he worked as Foreign News desk Editor.
Also in Australia he was also Director for African Migrants and refugees, Chief Representative for the Socialist League of Malawi in Australia and the Asia Pacific region.
At home, he worked with MBC as a freelance journalist/Broadcaster.
He also worked as government Chief of Protocol, Deputy Head of Mission in Namibia and special assistant responsible for NGOs and Civil Society to former President Bakili Muluzi and to the incumbent Bingu wa Mutharika.
He is now a peasant farmer at Kasoba in Karonga but has written several articles and publications in Malawi and Tanzania.
His titles include, Just a few: Prospects for Democracy in Malawi (Australia), Origins of Political Violence in Malawi (Australia), The Troubled political History of Malawi (Australia), a draft of Malawi’s Foreign Policy (Malawi) and What is Good Governance? (Malawi).
