Lilongwe charcoal vendors stone Minister of Environment Halima Daudi

People believed to be charcoal vendors in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe on Friday stoned Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Halima Daudi as she travelled to Dzalanyama Forest.

Nyasa Times has established that the irate mob, travelling in a lorry registration number MN 3131, threw stones at the minister’s motorcade breaking glasses of a vehicle that belongs to the department of forestry.

Daudi confirmed the attack and said it is ” uncalled for.”

“It’s sad that it [the attack] happened. What we wanted to tell them is that they should replace the trees they cut down by planting more,” said Daudi.

Police in Lilongwe have refused to comment on the matter.

About 85 per cent of the Malawi population, which survives on less than a dollar a day, uses firewood or charcoal as an energy source for domestic purposes- a thing that accounts for about 80 per cent of the deforestation in the country.
