New Labour Party to hold convention October 26

As Malawian political parties are busy strategizing ahead of next year’s tripartite elections, the New Labour Party (NLP) has announced it is set to hold its first ever national convention next month.

Formed late 2012 by former Minister of Finance, Friday Jumbe, the party said it would conduct its convention in Blantyre onOctober 26.

NLP Vice President Sam Mpasu, who also doubles as Publicity Secretary, told reporters Monday during the convention party members would elect presidential candidate and his or her running mate ahead of next year’s elections.

Mpasu, a former cabinet minister too, said during their national gathering the party would also launch its manifesto.

NLP, according to Mpasu, has the capacity to take part in the expected tightly-contested polls because it was well established with structures across the country.

He said since NLP was launched various leaders have been conducting meetings across the country to connect with the grassroots.

Jumbe, who is the party’s interim president, said the New Labour Party was ready to revolutionize Malawi economically, politically and socially once it is voted into power.

The NLP, whose colour is red and a burning torch (muuni) as symbol, is a ‘fall apart’ group of the former ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) currently being led by Atupele Muluzi.

Jumbe and Mpasu, a former Speaker of Parliament, were close allies of Atupele’s father, former President Bakili Muluzi, who started the UDF but fell out of grace after he pushed in his son to lead it.

Under the slogan ‘Party of the People’, NLP was registered by the Registrar of Political Parties on 9th January 2013 becoming Malawi’s political party number 46.

Besides Mpasu and Jumbe other notable faces in the party include former diplomats and ministers Ziliro Chibambo and Joseph Kubwalo and former deputy minister and Parliamentarian for Blantyre City West, Nicholas Kachingwe
