Alliance One donates school desks, renovates block
Students at Mbvunguti Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) can now have a sigh of relief that they will no longer learn while sitting on the floor, thanks to one of the tobacco firms, Alliance One Tobacco Malawi Limited for donating 100 desks and renovating school block to the tune of K4.5 million.
The school has been without desk since 2004 and students have been learning in a dilapidated condition but after realizing the need to help Alliance One responded in August this year.
Speaking during official handover ceremony at the school campus on Friday, Alliance One Social Services Coordinator, Godfrey Chimenya said the donation is one way of giving back to the communities as part of the company’s social responsibility.
“This is in relation to Alliance One social responsibility policy that makes sure that we are providing support for educational opportunities among children as well as adults”.
“We, therefore strive to make sure that no children are employed in any of our operations and monitor our practices so that the exploitation of minors in tobacco production is eliminated by seeing to it that all school going children should be properly placed in school until completion of the various educational levels” said Chimenya.
Principal Education Advisor (PEA) for Mbvunguti Zone Chrisy Bondo hailed Alliance One for complementing government efforts in improving education standards by providing school furniture’s and refurbishment of block to create a conducive learning environment for students.
“The donated furniture and painted school block will make a difference in addressing the needs from the schools. It is therefore expected that the donated furniture will motivate pupils and improve school attendance” she added.
Packson Lemani head teacher of the school also commended Alliance one for donating desks and giving the school facelift saying this will help to motivate students while in class.
The school located in Area 25 A in Lilongwe has three classroom blocks with 400 students against 16 teachers.
