Nyondo blasts Malawi politicians as ‘ monumental stumbling block to development’

President of the National Salvation Front (Nasaf), James Nyondo, has discredited the country’s way of running government  affairs,  saying more value is put on politicians and not deserving ordinary Malawians.

“We are a doomed nation,” Nyondo told Nyasa Times in an exclusive interview.

“Our country doesn’t need to put more value on politicians but rather on professionals, factory workers and our farmers.”

Nyondo, who will also contest for a parliamentary seat in Chitipa Central Constituency, said Nasaf will reverse the trend.

“Politicians will serve the nation and not the other way round,” he said.

He expressed dismay that Malawi is draining her already meager resources paying exalted titles of ‘Honourable’ and ‘Excellency’ millions of Kwacha at the expense of the country’s people who survive on less than a dollar a day.

“They want to be important and being important doesn’t come cheap,” said Nyondo.

He added: “They want to be seen by the masses as the important ones, therefor, they want the trappings important people have all at the expense of the taxpayers, donors and the poor.”

The US based trained lawyer, who reiterated that Nasaf will hold its national convention from 6-8 December next month in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, said Malawi needs men and women who are willing to forego all their perks and privileges for the sake of the nation.

“For close to fifty years we’ve placed more value on our politicians more than on our doctors, nurses, teachers and other professionals. It’s mistake.”

Nyondo said Malawi’s first president Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda left a professional civil service which was touted as the best in Africa but lost its glory when he lost power in 1994 to UDF government  and the situation continued  with DPP and now the current PP government where politicians order controlling officers to authorise dubious payments and expenditures, creating what is now infamous ‘cash-gate’.
