Mzimba food café operators drilled on hygiene, customer care
Restaurant operators at the popular and eventful Jenda roadblock in Mzimba district have been disciplined on how they can serve their customers better and manage the food they prepare.
The operators were drilled during a five-day training held in Mzuzu by catering specialists from the Malawi Institute of Tourism (MIT) in Blantyre.
It was organized by the Malawi Industrial Research and Technology Development Centre (MIRTDC) with funding from the Local Development Fund (LDF) and African Development Fund (ADF).
“The training was aimed at providing skills to restaurant operators from Jenda roadblock on how to prepare hotel standard local and western meals, how to welcome and serve their clients and how to improve sanitation within their premises,” explained Mike Moyo, Director of Urban Development LDF.
The operators are being trained under the Local Economic Project financed jointly by the Malawi Government and ADF targeting the just introduced four rural growth centers in the country’s three regions.
The newly established centres to benefit from the project include Jenda (Mzimba), Malomo (Nchisi), Monkey Bay (Mangochi) and Chitekesa in Phalombe district.
In these areas new markets and offices have been built and MIRTDC has already equipped hundreds of small-scale business people from about 50 enterprise groups with different skills such as bee keeping, piggery, tomato sauce production, among others.
“The aim of the project is to assist low income business persons and the less privileged Malawians to improve their economic status and enhance their livelihood through provision of infrastructure and skills,” said Moyo.
The project was launched in 2010 by the Malawi Government with a loan from ADF and is expected to wind up later this year.
According to Moyo, some 3000 groups will by then have benefitted from the project with an estimated population of 12 000 individual beneficiaries living around the growth centres.
