Fote implicates Malawi coaches in match fixing
Journalist Peter Fote who works for state broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has implicated some Malawi coaches to have been part of the plot to offer Benin technical information on how they could beat the Flames.
Flames assistant coach Jack Chamangwana said Fote “alleged that some coaches are part of this syndicate.”
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) summoned Fote for a hearing last week after his text purportedly meant to be sent to a Benin FA high-ranking official mistakenly went to Flames liaison officer James Sangala.
Chamangwana said the coaches implicated should be “exposed” and punished if found guilty.
He said the Flames technical panel will be forced to consider its working relationship with journalists in the wake of Fote’s match fixing plot.
FAM said Fote did not dispute sending the text which reads: “Hie boss this is a journalist who travelled with the Malawi team and I just wanted to say may the Almighty God bless you abundantly for helping me. I will, in return, pay you by assisting you with information to beat Malawi at home. Let’s talk; I am ready to do anything for you boss.”
Meanwhile, the fate of Flames head coach Young Chimodzi and his deputy Chamangwana will be determined by a FAM executive committee this Saturday following the expiry of their contracts.
FAM president Walter Nyamilandu has said despite guiding the Flames to the group stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, “it is not automatic” that the duo will be retained.
According to Nyamilandu, FAM will have to negotiate the contracts with government.
