ICRISAT donates pigeon pea seed to Malawi govt
The Malawi government has received 10 tonnes of pigeon pea seed to be distributed to about 2,000 farmers whose crops were damaged by the recent floods.
The donation has been made by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics (ICRISAT) while noting that the demand for pigeon pea certified seed in Malawi is significantly short of the required 2200 tons.
The symbolic presentation of the donation was made in Blantyre at a brief function attended by the visiting ICRISAT Director General David Bergvinson and Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima.
In the pictures, Vice President Chilima and Bergvinson admire the 50 kg bags of the pegion peas.

ICRISAT must be commended for this because it is like showing the country a mini-gold mine. If all that Pigeon-Pea seed can be planted, the benefits to the beneficiaries will be substantial not to mention the benefit to the country from the Forex that will be realized from export proceeds from the exported Pigeon Peas.
But the big question is, How does government ensure that the seed is not used as relish since planting time is 7 or 8 Months from now.
