Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (Fedoma)has lamented the energy porverty among people with disabilities and has since called on for an improved energy sector.
Fedoma Executive Director, Action Amos called on authorities consider the needs of people with disabilities and reduce energy poverty among them to ensure they effectively contribute to the country’s development.
Amos made the call during a workshop Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (Mera) had on Thursday with Fedoma members to seek their inputs towards a Framework the regulator is formulating.
Mera is courting people with disabilities as one way of increasing their participation in energy sector.
”Persons with disabilities just like any other citizen are affected, we therefore appreciating the study by Mera to determine factors of energy that apply to people with disabilities,” said Amos.
Amos said people with disabilities have specific needs such as fair prices, quality products and services, and environmental protection among others that authorities need to take into consideration.
”The authorities need to to play their role in monitoring of compliance by service providers and ensure there is an improvement of safety codes so that persons with disabilities are safe and access
better services,” added Amos.
Mera Senior Consumer and Public Relations Officer, Fitina Khonje said the Framework the regulator was developing would help to increase participation of youths, people with disabilities and women in energy sector.
”Every person plays a part in development. It is therefore our wish to see an increase in the number of people with disabilities taking part in the activities under the energy sector,” said Khonje.
Khonje said by engaging Fedoma members, Mera was able to appreciate the challenges people with disabilities experience in relation to issues concerning energy.
Ulemu Kamwendo from Malawi Union of the Blind hailed the audience with Mera, saying it allowed authorities to appreciate the needs of the people with disabilities.
