Apongozi TV Series for international exposure
Producers of Apongozi, a Malawian leading Television (TV) Series, HD Plus Creations say the movie is multilingual as one way to penetrating international market, including African nations that widely communicate in English.
Speaking on Friday (Valentine’s Day) when HD Plus Creations officially released Apongozi TV Series online streaming platforms, one of the directors Hastings Golosi said time has come for local Malawian movies to be appreciated from across the borders.
“For a long time, Malawi has been consuming movies from other countries such as Nigeria. We have seen it wise to add value to this traditional by introducing a multilingual series which uses English, Chiwemba, Shona, and Chichewa, as a way of penetrating other countries. Meanwhile, the movie is available on both local and international streaming platforms to increase access to the series,” Golosi
However, he was quick to highlight that the Apongozi Series were exciting on their own despite the use of many languages.
“Apongozi series are one of the best African stories from Malawi which have the power to grab the attention of the people because they are more than a TV show. And people should be ready to be entertained and educated is a new fascinating fashion,” said Golosi.
Apongozi TV Series is a dramatic comedy which revolves around love and stimulating cultural practices that challenge the viewers and reveal an astounding array of Malawian stories.
The series officially premiered on Zodiak Television in December 2022 and was airing on Zodiak’s Facebook page and HD Plus Creations’ YouTube channel.
The series depicts a contentious story of matrilineal (Chikamwini) family which stays in a compound with their daughters and sons-in-law, a development which unfolds untold drama and twists every day.
The twists include scandals where sons-in-law send offensive pictures and videos (nudes) to their mother in-law (Apongozi) erroneously.
Golosi said he was inspired by the radio drama series such as Zimachitika and Tilitonse to harness Apongozi TV series.
“I got the inspiration way back, I used to listen to Zimachitika and Tilitonse… I come from the background of listening to a lot of stories from my grandparents. Growing up in the southern region also inspired me where there are a lot of tea rooms. I realized [that] there are a lot of things that happen. Imagine, a strong woman controlling a bunch of men, how can it look like?
That’s how I got the inspiration to have a strong woman who has a lot of son in-laws, she should have strict rules, so basically, that’s how I got the inspiration,” Golosi explained.
