Basketball gala as G.Y Imports & Exports celebrate branch opening
G.Y Imports & Exports Limited, the country’s major basketball sponsors will on Sunday, October 16, 2016 host a basketball gala at Katoto Basketball Courts in Mzuzu as the company celebrates the grand opening of its newly established branch in the northern city of Mzuzu.
The basketball tournament, which is scheduled to start at 9.30 in the morning has attracted two basketball ladies’ teams and four men sides including the reigning basketball kings Magang’a from Zomba.
The ladies’ teams include Lady Bravehearts, a team sponsored by the Lilongwe based firm and Nozobal All Star Ladies, who will battle for a K150,000 cash prize.
Magang’a, Bravehearts Men, Nkhulande and Pistons are expected to battle it out in the men’s section, where the winner is expected to walk cart home a trophy and K200,000.
The other participating teams will also not be left out as they are set to get K100,000 appearance fees from the suppliers of ICT equipment, stationery, furniture and sanitary materials.
Speaking in an interview ahead of the launch, managing director of G.Y Imports & Exports Griffin Kalua said the company decided to celebrate the opening of new office premises with a basketball tournament because of its close association with the sport.
“For the past two years, we have sponsored basketball at almost every level and we have our own basketball teams competing in the leagues. There could have been no other better way of celebrating the launch for us than holding a basketball tournament,” said Kalua, whose company has pumped in K1 million into the tournament.
Commenting on the involvement of Magang’a, who recently won the King & Queen of the Courts basketball tournament sponsored by G.Y Imports and its sister firm Dr Print, Kalua said they have involved the side from the old capital to enable Mzuzu fans sample top basketball action.
“This is a team that has beaten almost everybody who matters in basketball so we want Mzuzu fans to sample top basketball action after being starved of top class action this this year,” he said.
The G.Y Import & Exports managing director urged Mzuzu fans to come enemas and witness the launch, expected to be presided over by Mzuzu City Mayor Councillor William Mkandawire.
The new office is located off Boardman Road Opposite Mzuzu Main Mosque.
