Bingu Tigresses lead in GOtv Malawi netball champions league

Bingu Tigresses have launched their charge to be the first team to claim the GOtv Netball Champions League as they are basking comfortably on the summit table after clobbering their rivals Escom Sisters 38-27 baskets in a highly contested encounter on Sunday at Malawi College of Medicine.

Tigresses, who have 6 points, are leading on goal aggregate followed by Escom with the same points but they have notched fewer baskets to Tigresses.

In their Sunday crunch tie, Tigresses through their slippery shooter Sindi ‘Sniper’ Simutowe showed determination to win the match as they led in all the four quarters.

For instance, in the first quarter, Tigresses breathed fire as they led 10-6, 20-11, 16-31 before switching off power at Escom a 38-27 margin.

In other matches on Saturday, Bingu Tigresses defeated MTL Queens by 45-39 baskets while Escom Sisters were 38-30 victors to Civonets.

In another highly contested match, Blue Eagles lost 41-44 baskets to MTL Queens.

In an all Lilongwe teams affair much improved Blue Eagles pruned Civonets by 55-48 baskets.

As it stands, Bingu Tigresses lead the log table with 6 points followed by Escom Sisters with the same numbers of points but baskets are separating the two sides.

MTL Queens and Blue Eagles share 4 points each while Civonets are yet to secure any victory.

Netball Association of Malawi general secretary Caro Bapu told Nyasa Times that they were impressed with the first phase of the tournament and urged netball fans in Lilongwe to come in their large numbers during the second phase on June 8, 2013 at Kamuzu Institute of Sports.

Bapu also hailed the teams for their stunning performances.

The Netball Champions League has attracted top five netball teams from the country- Escom Sisters, Bingu Tigresses, MTL Queens, Civonets and Blue Eagles Sisters. The team with the highest number of points will automatically win the championship.

The top team will walk away with K1 million and a locally made wooden trophy with first runners-up getting K500, 000 and second runners-up pocketing K400, 000. Teams on positions four and five will cart home K300, 000 and K200, 000 respectively.
