Blantyre Lions Club help needy students: Fundraises for girls’ hostel
After raising funds through golf tournament and managed to construct about 60-beds hostel for Namikasi Day Secondary School, Lions Club of Blantyre has organized a charity dinner to raise more funds in aid of the school.
The school has over 120 beds but the Lions Club managed to construct only 60-beds hostel through the funds that were generated during a golf tournament in April this year. The school needs more beds to resolve accommodation problems.
Lions Club of Blantyre member, Makhecha Tarang has called on for donations from well wishers to support the club’s initiative.
“We have already built 60 beds however there are 120 plus girls sleeping at the moment. Lions Club International has asked us to raise 25 percent of the funds and 75 percent will be sent by them,” explained Tarang.
According to Tarang, the hostel is costing about US$100,000 (K73.4 million at current exchange rate) and then Club needs to raise US$25,000 only (K18.3 million).
“A table is selling at K200,000. People are free to make their bookings. The dinner is this Friday 25th August at Ryalls Hotel.”
Namikasi Day Secondary School is in Lilangwe, Blantyre- Rural. It is a government school with an expected total enrolment of 160 girl students from Form 1 to Form 4 per year.
The school faces problem of accommodation which is forcing some girls to find accommodation in unsuitable places not convenient for their personal and education development.
“The problem of lack of suitable accommodation at the school has resulted in many girl students getting impregnated before completing school,” noted Tarang.
