Catholic give humanitarian aid to flood victimsin Zomba, Machinga
Zomba Diocese Research and Development Department (ZARDD) has given humanitarian aid to flood victims in eastern districts of Zomba and Machinga where houses and grain fields have been greatly devastated by the recent heavy winds and rains.
Fr. Peter Mulomole, ZARDD’s Executive Director, speaking at T/A Nkula in Machinga assured the victims that God does not forget his people especially those that are suffering in various ways.
“God knows how best to help those of you that are suffering. He helped the Israelites in exile and brought them back to the promised land. He will help all of you in this disaster through various people, organisations and churches including the Catholic Diocese of Zomba.” Mulomole said.
The Pastoral Secretary for Zomba Diocese, Fr. Michael Mkhomeni, asked the victims to learn to share the little food and items they have just as Jesus Christ advised the disciples to feed many people from the little food they had.
On her remarks the District Commissioner for Machinga, Reinghard Kaweta Chavula, thanked Zomba Diocese development arm ZARDD for the support and called upon the beneficiaries to use the relief items responsibly.
She then asked ZARDD to call for more support from well-wishers in helping the victims especially in promoting irrigation farming so that the victims should be able to harvest more yields at a later stage.
In his response to the plea, the CADECOM’s national Programmes Coordinator, Martin Mazenga, assured the DC and victims that Episcopal Conference of Malawi’s development arm will continue to source more funds for irrigation farming to help the victims.
According to George Limbani Phiri, ZARDD’s CADECOM Director, ZARDD has also distributed relief items to Chinkhwangwa zone in T/A Mwambo where thousands of people out of 24103 households in Zomba Rural have also been greatly affected by the floods.
Phiri also said that plans are underway to give material assistance to people at T/A Chikowi’s Ngwerero zone where thousands of households have also been displaced by heavy floods.
Courtesy of Trocaire assistance ZARRD got almost 10 Million Malawi Kwacha, apart from the initial MK 200 thousand Kwacha from the CADECOM National office, to assist flood victims in Zomba and Machinga Districts.
Salome Mumba Trocaire’s Water Officer has since assured ZARDD of more support from Trocaire in order to alleviate the victims’ problems.
The targeted 1200 households have so far each received 25kilogrammes of maize, two kilogrammes of beans, two plastic plates and cups including a ten metre plastic paper.
