Chakwera attacks DPP officials for dividing the country on tribal lines
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has told Malawians to ignore politicians who want to divide them on tribal lines.
President Chakwera said this on Tuesday when he officially opened the K30 billion Phalombe District Hospital.
His statement comes after Mulhako wa Alhomwe cultural grouping refused to invite him at a cultural event on Sunday at Chonde in Mulanje.
Most of Mulhakho wa Alhomwe senior officials, including its patron former President Professor Peter Mutharika, are opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members.
But Chakwera said this country can only develop if people stop practising tribalism and regionalism.
He said his administration would scatter development projects across the country regardless of tribe or region.
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) secretary general Eisenhower Mkaka lashed out at DPP officials for highly politicising the Mulhakho wa Alhomwe cultural grouping.
He said the Sunday cultural event was highly politicised as speakers at the event, including Mutharika, spoke politics.
Mkaka assured people from the southern region that the Chakwera administration would not discriminate against them in development activities.
Turning to the new hospital, President Dr Chakwera said the 250-bed facility is crucial in achieving universal access to health and a prosperous Malawi.
The construction works started in 2017, but the project stalled due to financial constraints and the government financed its completion in 2020 and 2021.
The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the Saudi Fund for Development as well as the government of Malawi financed the project.
The facility has 300 health personnel with state-of-the-art facilities.
The hospital will serve over 450,000 people.
