Chakwera returns with hope: ‘Malawi Congress Party is ready for polls’
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Dr Lazarous Chakwera has returned home from a fund-raising tour of the United States, saying he is ready to go flat out and campaign for May 20 elections.
The official campaign begins on March 21, a day after the dissolution of parliament, and will go on for 60 days.
Chakwera arrived on Tuesday through Kamuzu International Airport in the capital Lilongwe where he was welcomed by hundreds of MCP supporters.
He described his tour in the US as “successful” and said he was buoyant the MCP will manage for a successful campaign.
Chakwera said he was set to go into a campaign period for his first attempt in presidential elections.
“I am ready. Malawi Congress Party is ready. We are ready,” said Chakwera.
He said “the will of the people” shall prevail in the May 20 elections.
Chakwera has promised to put an end to the ‘mafia way of governing’ by the People’s Party (PP) led government once he gets into power in May, saying people have suffered under the PP administration.
He bemoaned drug shortage in hospitals, hunger and late payment of civil servants salaries and other anomalies which he said are killing Malawians.
Chakwera said looting at Capital Hill has been the source of Malawians pain.
He said MCP is the only party that can bring “economic liberation.”
But PP spokesperson Ken Msonda said MCP has no clue of how government is run in a democratic set-up .
