Chakwera Sets Bold Precedent by Facing Parliament Amid Economic Discontent
President Lazarus Chakwera made history by facing the National Assembly on Monday, boldly responding to questions from Members of Parliament amid mounting public criticism over the country’s struggling economy and factual errors in the State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Chakwera’s appearance marked the first time a sitting Malawian president presented themselves for direct questioning in Parliament—a move widely praised by governance experts as a step towards strengthening executive accountability.
In a calm yet assertive tone, Chakwera defended his administration’s performance, dismissing allegations of dishonesty. “I am not guilty… I am not a liar,” he declared, addressing widespread accusations stemming from discrepancies in his SONA speech.
His decision to face Parliament fulfilled Sections 89(3)(C) and 89(4) of the Malawian Constitution, which require the President to provide information to the National Assembly upon request—provisions that had been largely ignored by previous administrations.
Political analysts lauded Chakwera’s boldness, describing the move as a watershed moment for Malawi’s democratic consolidation. “This is a significant development in Malawi’s governance history. It enhances transparency and sets a high standard for future presidents,” said political commentator Henry Kachaje.
However, the President’s appearance did not quell public discontent entirely, as many citizens continue to grapple with rising inflation, fuel shortages, and a depreciating currency. The opposition dismissed Chakwera’s explanations, insisting the government had failed to implement sustainable economic policies.
Despite the criticisms, Chakwera’s gesture is expected to set a lasting precedent, forcing future leaders to engage directly with Parliament. As the economic crisis deepens, Malawians will closely watch whether this newfound commitment to accountability will translate into tangible improvements in their lives.
