DPP MP Donton Mkandawire, Rev Pat Banda dead
Professor Donton Samuel Mkandawire, the ruling DPP MP for Mzimba Central, died on Christmas Eve and former presidential aide during Bakili Muluzi administration, Rev Pat Banda has also passed on.
Mkandawire, 72 died at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre, according to the office of the Clerk of Parliament and DPP secretariat.
DPP secretary general Wakuda Kamanga told Nyasa Times that it was “terrible shock” to lose a dedicated member.
Mkandawire also served as secretary general of Malawi Congress Party during the transition of one party state to multiparty democracy.
“Donton will be missed beyond measure as an MP, as a friend and a colleague,” said Kamanga.
After the fall of dictator Kamuzu Banda, Mkandawire joined UDF and later was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Lilongwe City Assembly.
He dumped UDF to join DPP and won the Mzimba central seat during 2009 elections.
Mkandawire once served as head of Malawi Examinations Board (Maneb) and Malawi Institute of Education.
Burial will depend on the arrival of his children from overseas, according to family sources.
Meanwhile, Nyasa Times also learnt former advisor at State House, Rev Pat Banda died in Lilongwe after a long illness.
Rev Banda was appointed deputy minister in the Muluzi cabinet when he ditched Aford to join UDF.
