Ex-MHC boss nicked by ACB over housing scam

Anti-Corruption Bureau  (ACB)  on Thursday  arrested former general manager  of  Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) , Golden Matiya , in relation to a multi-million kwacha housing scam which also involves President Bingu wa Mutharika’s brother, Peter

Matiya, who joined MHC on September 15, 2008, left the company recently after government declined to renew his contract recently following investigation in the housing scam.

Matiya: Arrested

His lawyer Ralph Kasambara confirmed to Nyasa Times that the former MHC boss was arrested and indicted on corruption charges.

“Yes Mr Matiya has indeed been arrested,” Kasambara said when asked to confirm.

He however said Matiya was released on bail.

ACB opened investigations following revelations that MHC, a parastatal, lost about K105 million (about $690 789) by selling houses at highly discounted prices that were also said to be less than half the market rates.

The 22 houses where shared among ministers including Peter Mutharika, John Bande and senior officials at MHC

Matiya was also a beneficiary when he bought a house and did not declare interest as stipulated in MHC corruption prevention policy.

In the scam, Peter Mutharika benefited a 62 per cent discount, Bande got a 49 per cent discount while Matiya himself a 33 per cent discount.
