FAM, Fifa hold women’s administrators course
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has organised a three-day capacity building workshop for women’s football administrators at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
The workshop, which started on Monday and winds up today, is being facilitated by Fifa experts, Kenyan Doreen Nabwire and Zimbabwean Thuba Banda
The main facilitators of the training are FIFA experts Doreen Nabwire from Kenya and Thuba Sibanda from Zimbabwe.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya was quoted by the association’s website as saying the workshop was made possible after observing gaps during the inaugural the under 16 and under 14 leagues last year.
“The workshop will equip the football administrators with the necessary skills and knowledge to run the sport. This in turn will enhance the efficiency and safety of our leagues. Safety and efficiency are not mere aspirations but fundamental prerequisites for creating an environment where our players can flourish and excel,” he explained.
On her part, National Women’s Football Association Chairperson Adellaide Migogo said the workshop is important as it will help sharpen the skills of women’s football administrators in the country.
“I am very happy and grateful from district level up to national development. In the past, only administrators from regions underwent this kind of training but now we have administrators from districts, regions and national level. This means we are growing capacity at all levels,” she said.
Nwabwire said after the three-day training they expect that the skills of women’s football administrators will have a bearing on inspiring more girls to play football.
She said: “Malawi is a beneficiary of Fifa women’s football development programmes where they applied successfully for League development that is last year and the women’s football campaign. The campaign seeks to increase the number of girls playing football globally. So this is the first push to ensure that they capitalize on this program and ensure that they give every girl an opportunity to play football from a very young age.”
Participants have been drawn from the National Women’s Football Association, Regional Women’s Football Committee Members, District Committee members and clubs.
Malawi made history after winning the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Football Championship in dramatic fashion when it came from behind to beat Zambia 2-1.
Malawi has also produced good women’s football players over the years with Tabitha Chawinga and her sister Temwa currently putting Malawi on the map.
Tabitha plies her trade in France for PSG Feminine on loan from a Chinese club Wuhan Jianghan. She has reached another milestone by being named the French League Player of the Year for the 2022/24.
Temwa is playing for Kansas City in the US where he is also doing well.
