FEDOMA challenges parents of children with disabilities to give their children access to education
Federation of Disability Organization in Malawi, (FEDOMA) has challenged parents with children with disabilities to prioritize sending their children to school in order to shape bright future for them.
Acting FEDOMA Executive Director Simon Munde, , said this during a grantees meeting where organizations of people living with disabilities convened to discuss with Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) as well as legal council on issues pertaining to new electoral laws so that as persons living with disabilities, they should have better understand and be able to participate in the fourth coming elections. The meeting was sponsored by Disability Rights Fund (DRF).
He said it is sad that some parents subjects their children to street begging which is counter productive.
Munde then thanked Malawi government, through the vision leadership of President Lazarus Chakwera in priotizing inclusivity in government positions by recruiting person with disabilities into higher positions.
“You might have seen that the participation of persons with disabilities in political and public life has been sought of enhanced, we once had a minister responsible for persons with disabilities, there was a time we even had a deputy speaker who was a person with disability, currently we have one person with disability who is a member of parliament as well as Malawi Human rights commission they have two persons with disabilities as commissioners even the Malawi Peace and Unity has a person with disability as a commissioner,” Munde said.
He further said even in the education sector FEDOMA has been championing the issues of inclusivity in the education setup and as of now the country has National Inclusive education strategy, this just shows the commitment that the current government has in ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind.
He also said as advocates of human rights of people living with disabilities, they are always there to bring a crop of children with disabilities who are educated and with recent reports which is indicating a positive turn out of children with disabilities into primary school enrollment, brings hope that the country will have a good percentage of people living with disabilities who are educated.
