FISD Challenge Cup launched in style
Foundation for Irrigation and Sustainable Development (Fisd) on Saturday launched the second edition of the Fisd Challenge Cup which is now at the tune of K50.2 million in a colorful ceremony that took place at Chitowe Stadium in Nkhotakota.
Executive secretary of the Malawi National Council of Sports, George Jana commended Fisd for their commitment to sponsor football through the challenge cup following the increment of the package from K45 million to K50.2 million.
Jana urged Malawians to support the company, embrace Fisd services and products as a way of saying thank you, so that it continues sponsoring the cup and development of football in Malawi.
He advised Football Association Malawi [FAM] to ensure that it continue managing the cup very well and be accountablr to gain trust from the sponsors and also attract some companies to bankroll the sport.
FAM Executive member, who is also vice chair for FAMs Competition subcommittee, Daud Mtanthiko said the association is very thankful to FISD limited company for its commitment to sponsor the cup for the next five years.
Mtanthiko has since issued a stern warning to all teams taking part in this year’s edition to abide to the rules and regulations of the cup which has been set up by the competitions committee.
“We want a free, fair and violence free cup from today to the final whistle of the cup,” said Mtanthiko
According to Mtanthiko a total of 57 teams will take part in this years edition 29 teams are from districts with the remaining coming from Regions and Super league teams
Executive Director for FISD Limited company, Moses Chirambo said FISD being a Malawian owned company thought it wise to help the government in football development by sponsoring the cup which aims at developing the sport from grassroots level hence the involvement of district teams at the early stage of the cup
“We are here to help the development of football for the next five years. Let’s support one another, we need you to support us and we will also support you. We can use football as a way off spreading information about agriculture activities,” he said.
.In an opening match , Fikiza FC from Salima booted out Nkhotakota All Stars from the cup after defeating them by five goals to three in a post match penalties. Itended two all draw after a 90 minutes.
Before the launch, there was trophy parade around the Nkhotakota boma with live band performance by Skeffa Chimoto display of acrobatics by the famous acrobatics crew, Kufewa acrobatics from Lilongwe in Area 36 during the half time.
Be Forward Wanderers are defending champions after beating Kamuzu Barracks on post-match penalties last year.
