Gabadinho misses penalty as Bidvest start title defence with loss
Bidvest Wits started their PSL title defence on a poor note against Cape Town Stars on Friday in a match they dominated.
Cape Town City scored through Lhlohololo Majoro in the 37th minute against the run of play.
But Malawian star Gabadinho Mhango who was the team’s top goal scorer last season, fluffed an opportunity to score his first goal of the season.
Mhango who was not in the starting line-up made an immediate impact after coming off the bench in the 46th minute.
The pacy Malawian international won a penalty in the 52nd minute after he was clipped in the box.
But he picked up himself to take the penalty only to see his powerful shot comfortably saved by goalkeeper Suib Walters in the 52nd minute.
Towards the end of the game Mhango could have made amends with solo efforts but Englishman James Keene headed over the bar to hand South Africa legend Ben MCCarthy charges starting on a winning note.
MCarthy confessed that his charges played second fiddle but cherished the win.
“It doesn’t matter how you play what matters is to win,” he told Kickoff.
