Hyenas terrorise residents in Zomba
Vicious hyenas are reported to be terrorizing residents of Mpunga Township in Malawi’s old capital city of Zomba.
According to Police Public Relations Officer for the Eastern Region, Inspector Thomeck Nyaude, members of the community policing forum reported the incident after some two goats were eaten up by the beasts on Tuesday.
Inspector Nyaude said the police are consulting with management of Liwonde National Park on how the hyenas can be contained.
“It is true that about six hyenas have been spotted by residents of Mpunga Township. Two goats tied on a tree at a certain home have been devoured by the vicious hyenas,” said Inspector Nyaude in an interview with Nyasa Times.
He said the residents are living in fear but the police are doing all they could to calm the nerves.
The police spokesperson added that the hyenas used to come at night but of late they have been spotted at around 5pm in the area.
He could not commit himself as to whether the hyenas are superstitious or not.
