Irate mob at Phwezi set minibus ablaze after boy killed in an accident

Angry villagers at Phwezi in Rumphi district on Wednesday burnt a minibus, Toyota Hiace registration number LL 7949 and severely injured the driver after he was involved in a road accident  killing a 9 year old boy.

According to a report by Rumphi police station, the said vehicle was going to Karonga from Mzuzu.

However, upon reaching Phwezi, one of the popular trading center along Mzuzu-Karonga M1 road in Rumphi district, the driver lost control due to over speeding and hit the boy who was crossing the road at zebra line in the process.

According to the report, the vehicle had eight passengers.

“The vehicle then swerved to the extreme nearside where it hit a stationary broken down vehicle registration number BP 1921 Mitsubishi canter and the victim died on the spot due to head injuries,” reads the report.

Adding “the driver and the passengers escaped unhurt but the driver was severely beaten by angry mob and has been admitted at Rumphi District Hospital.”

The police identified the driver as Pililani Mphande, aged 29 years from Matemanga village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba district.

The deceased Washington Mzumara hailed from Kajeyele village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira in Rumphi district.

what kind of society are we turning to. Administering instant justice? Who benefits? This tendency of burning things after traumatic incidences is worrying. Is this the way Malawians want to be resolving motor vehicle accidents? Drivers please slow down!!

Honestly this Mob justice has no room in a country like Malawi governed by rule of law and should not be tolerated at all.
