Jamaican artist Busy Signal confirms Malawi show: Sand Music Festival

Amidst skepticism among Malawians regarding Sand Music Festival’s claims that they had secured the signature of highly rated Jamaican artist Busy Signal to perform at this year’s event, the artist’s UK-based agent has confirmed that the dancehall artist will indeed perform at Livingstonia Beach in Salima at the end of October.

Spencer Mutemasango said Malawians should not be pensive about Busy Signal’s availability.

“It is confirmed. Busy Signal is coming to Malawi,” said Mutemasango who is director of UK-based Big Base Entertainment.

“I have been dealing directly with Lucius Banda and there is no cause for alarm. Actually, Busy Signal will perform in Zimbabwe on October 24 before flying out to Malawi for a performance on October 31 or thereabouts. In fact, Busy Signal will be in Malawi for six days,” he said.

Busy Signal is best known for the number one hits Dreams of Brighter DaysCome OverThe Gambler andReggae Music Again. The artist is currently one of Jamaica’s top musicians.

Mutemasango’s Big Base Entertainment is registered with Companies House in England under company number 09339736. Their given address is 412 Footscray Road, London.

The outfit is renowned for hosting big name international artists in Zimbabwe, recently hosting singer Shola Ama.

Big Base Entertainment have also taken Mavado, Beenie Man, Elephant Man and Sizzla to Zimbabwe.

“We have been in the business for seven years and people should not doubt us,” he said, adding that his firm is in talks to take rappers Jay-Z and P Diddy to Zimbabwe.

Briefing the press at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre yesterday morning, the organising committee of the festival said this year’s event will be back on the beaches of Sunbird Livingstonia Beach bigger and better.

Speaking at the press briefing, chairperson of Sand Music Festival Lucius Banda said the choice of Busy Signal as the headliner of this year’s event was part of the festival’s desire for innovation.

“Sand Music Festival is improving every year. This year it is coming even bigger and better upon invitation of Busy Signal as the headliner,” he said.

Lucius described Busy Signal as not only a landmark for the festival, but also someone who will create opportunities for local artists.

“Busy Signal is one of the influential musicians in the world who will make a difference to Sand Music Festival and Malawi’s entertainment industry as a whole,” he said.

Asked about the probability of Busy Signal making it to Malawi given that some international artists have disappointed by not turning up, Lucius assured fans that Sand Music Festival has already signed a contract with the Jamaican artist.

He said Sand Festival has partnered Zimbabwean promoters, where the artist will perform prior to his Malawian performance.

Apart from Busy Signal, this year’s Sand Music Festival will take on board Zimbabwe’s Jah Prayzer, Danny from Zambia, the Black Missionaries, Lucius Banda and his Zembani Band, Nepman, Lulu, Skeffa Chimoto, BlakJack, Ethel Kamwendo Banda, Thocco Katimba, The Great Angels Choir, Limbani Banda, Paul Banda and Edgar Ndi Davis, among others.
