JB receives ‘legend award’ in US for sound leadership
The African Methodist Episcopal Church of Greater Mt. Nebo has awarded the ‘Legend Award ‘ to President Mrs Joyce Banda in recognition of her achievements, in uplifting the quality of life for women, youths empowerment and good leadership in Malawi.
The ceremony was held Sunday at Greater Mt. Nebo of AMEC, 1001 Old Mitcheville Road, Bowie, Washington D.C. before noon.
Speaking before the presentation of the Award, Reverend Jonathan Weaver who is also Pastor of the church said: “President Mrs Joyce Banda has contributed tremendously towards projects aimed at scaling up the quality of life of the under privileged women, orphans and disadvantaged people including youths.
“She has the kind of leadership that is unwavering and has seen Malawi witnessing smooth transition, peace and unity amongst people, from the time she took over the mantle of leadership of the country after the death of the former president Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika on April 05, 2012.”
Receiving the award, President Banda thanked Pastor Jonathan Weaver for the award, saying she did not expect such occasion.
“I thank you Pastor Jonathan Weaver and the entire Church.
“At home, Malawi, I established the National Association of Business Women (Nabw) in 1990 which to date trained over 110,000 women to manage small scale businesses.
“I also created the Joyce Banda Foundation which has enabled tens of thousands of girls and boys attain both primary and secondary school education,” she said.
Banda said her initiatives had played a significant role in equipping the young generation to be productive citizens, thereby be able to contribute positively to the national social economic development of their country.
She explained that she believed it was God who planned for her to receive the ‘wonderful award’ on that particular day in USA.
” I knew Pastor Duncan Allen some time back, who was the founder of the Church, at the time he was staying in Zambia.
”I was told about this Church that it supported development projects in Africa, so I made sure that I should come and meet Reverend Jonathan Weaver,” she said.
President Banda was sworn in to lead Malawi on April7, 2012.
During the ceremony Pastor Weaver donated US$1,000 Cheque to President Banda, to assist the Joyce Banda Foundation.
